About Kurinchi Kumaran Temple

Kurinchi Kumaran Temple stands as a vibrant spiritual and cultural sanctuary serving the Hindu community in Wellington, New Zealand. Established in 1992 by the devoted Mr. Krishnasamy Arulanandasamy (Kannan), the temple’s beginnings trace back to monthly prayer gatherings and the heartfelt desire for a permanent place of worship. That dream first took shape during Skanda Shashti at the first temple site at 22 Webb Street, Wellington. This marked the foundation of New Zealand’s first South Indian Hindu Temple.

"Kovil illa ooril, kudiyirukka koodathu" — as the Tamil saying goes, “Do not live in a town without a temple.” Kurinchi Kumaran Temple brings that timeless wisdom to life in the heart of Wellington.

May Lord Kurinchi Kumaran bless you and your loved ones abundantly.

In 2000, the temple transitioned to its permanent home at 3 Batchelor Street, Newlands, inaugurated with a foundation stone ceremony led by Dame Catherine Tizard, then Governor-General of New Zealand. In December 2013, the temple celebrated a milestone with the grand Kumbabhishekam ceremony, marking the completion of its traditional South Indian-style temple structure. Administered by volunteers under the New Zealand Hindu Association Inc., the temple serves over 3000 devotees, offering a sacred space for regular poojas, abhishekams, and vibrant celebrations of Hindu festivals. Our temple is home to a rich pantheon of deities, including:

Looking ahead, we are preparing for our next Kumbabhishekam in November 2025—a once-in-a-decade spiritual milestone. We warmly invite devotees to participate, sponsor, and volunteer. Your support sustains the legacy of this temple and continues the vision first sparked by Kannan and carried by our community ever since.
